Programs & Services

The Somerset Council on Aging strives to deliver the highest quality services to all senior citizens in our community. Please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns. 

Programs & Services Provided by the Council on Aging

  • Transportation - Our vans are available for medical appointments in Somerset, Swansea and Fall River, Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 2:00pm. (Please book medical appointments to Fall River in the morning if possible)
  • Wednesday Grocery Shopping Transportation to Stop and Shop and Walmart at 9:00am
  • On the second Wednesday of the month we will go to Market Basket at 9:00am.
  • Please call 508-646-2833 the day before by 2:00pm to schedule your ride. (We do not offer same day rides)

Food Pantry

There will be a Food Pantry at the COA once a month on the last Friday of the month from 1:00pm - 2:30pm.  Pre-registration is required. 

Caregiver Support Group 

All caregivers every first and third Thursday of the month from 6:00pm - 7:30pm and every second and fourth Monday of the month from 1:00pm to 2:30pm, come join us in the kitchen of the COA to find support in a warm and comforting environment. Light refreshments will be served.

Shine Program 

SHINE (Serving the Health Insurance Needs of Everyone) provides free health insurance information, counseling and assistance to all Massachusetts residents who have Medicare or who are about to be eligible for Medicare. 

Please call our office to schedule an appointment!

  • Open enrollment is from October 15th to December 7th.  This is the time to make changes to your current health plan.  It is a very BIG time of the year for many seniors. These appointments start in October. Do not wait to call if you are looking to make changes, appointments fill up quickly and it is by appointment only! Somerset residents take preference. 

Durable Medical Equipment 

Our durable medical equipment program loans various medical devices and supplies to seniors at no cost. This program is run by donations so supplies can vary. Items that are typically offered include wheelchairs, walkers, canes, shower chairs, adult briefs, etc. Please call ahead to check inventory!

Fuel Assistance

The Fuel Assistance program runs from November 1st to April 30th through Citizens for Citizens who helps assist in paying heating bills for low-income individuals and families that qualify, for the winter months. The COA serves as a fuel assistance outreach partner and does not directly process the applications. If you need assistance in filling out the application please contact the COA to make an appointment.   

SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program)

SNAP provides financial assistance for food purchases.  The COA serves as a SNAP outreach partner and will assist seniors with filling out SNAP applications.  The COA does not directly process applications.  If you need assistance please contact the COA to make an appointment.  

RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES

Mind and Body Wellness

Osteoporosis

Every Monday and Thursday at 9:30am. This class is run by a wonderful group of seniors who have been exercising at the COA for years! They focus on areas affected by osteoporosis. This class is free.

Line Dancing

Join us for a fun upbeat class every Monday as Joan teaches us line dancing! Beginner from 9:30am - 10:30am and Improver from 10:30am - 11:00am.  It is a great form of exercise not only for the body but for the mind.  Class is a $3.00 donation, all are welcome. 

Tai-Yo-ba

(25 people max) Every Monday afternoon from 12:45pm to 1:30pm and Friday morning from 9:15am - 10am.  Please join us! This program offers an upbeat and exciting class, that focuses on balance and building strength all while sitting. A great class to join with a friend after lunch or to start any Friday! This class is a $3.00 donation, all are welcome.

Tai Chi with Jamie

Join us every Tuesday morning at 9:05am for a slow-paced Tai Chi class taught by Sifi Jamie McGuire. Class is a $3 donation, all are welcome.

Exercise with Lynne 

Join us every Wednesday at 9:30am for a fun aerobic-style exercise program. This program features lights weights and even some dancing. Class is a $3 donation, all are welcome.

Zumba

Come on down!! Serena Honeycutt is here every Thursday from 10:00am to 11:00am This class offers a fun and energetic vibe to our seniors who love music and love to dance all while exercising! Class is a $3.00 donation, all are welcome.

Drums Alive

Cardio drumming with Judy is a fun activity done to music on Friday mornings from 10:45am - 11:45am (no class the last Friday of the month).  It improves levels of balance, gait and functionality as well as a greater emotional/mental wellness. Space is limited.  Please sign up in the COA office to attend this class. Class is a $3.00 donation.

Bridge- Every Tuesday at 9:30am
Canasta- Every Wednesday at 10:00am 
Knitting/Crafts- Every Thursday at 9:30am in the kitchen 
Bingo - Every Tuesday at 12:00pm Cost: $2.00 ($5.00 Bingo every 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month)
Puzzles/Books- Join us anytime Monday- Friday available to borrow or to stay and enjoy the company of others

Monthly Events

  • Movie Day- The COA offers free movies twice a month. All movies start at 12:30 p.m. (unless otherwise noted). There is popcorn, candy, and drinks to enjoy during the show as well. Please pick up a monthly newsletter at the Council on Aging to see our upcoming movies each month. 
  • The Council on Aging hosts breakfasts, luncheons, dinners and educational presentations throughout the year, please stop by and see what we have going on!!!!
