ANNUAL TOWN ELECTION 2020

The Annual Town Election will be held on April 13, 2020.  Nomination papers for interested candidates will be available on January 2, 2020.  In order to run for office in the Town Election, interested persons must be a registered voter and resident of the Town of Somerset and must obtain the signatures of at least 50 registered voters of the Town of Somerset.

The Offices to be elected are as follows:
Town Clerk - 3 yr term
Selectman - 3 yr term
Assessor - 3 yr term
Moderator - 3 yr term
Somerset School Committee K-8 (2) - 3 yr term
Somerset Berkley Regional School Committee - 3 yr term
Water & Sewer Commissioner - 3 yr term
Trustees of the Public Library (2) - 3 yr term
Playground and Recreation Commissioners - 5 yr term
Planning Board - 5 yr term
Somerset Housing Authority - 5 yr term

The LAST day to OBTAIN nomination papers to be a candidate in this election is Thursday, February 20 at 5:00 pm.
 
The LAST day to RETURN nomination papers for certification of signatures is Monday, February 24 at 5:00 pm.
 
POLLING HOURS FOR THIS ELECTION ARE 12:00 pm - 8:00 pm
 
Absentee Ballot Applications are available for anyone who will be out of Town on Election day, unable to vote at the polling location due to a physical disability, or a religious belief.   *****UPDATE - THE LAW HAS BEEN RELAXED FOR THE REQUIREMENTS OF ABSENTEE VOTING.  ANYONE WHO CONSIDERS THEMSELVES TO BE SELF QUARANTINED AT THE TIME OF THE ELECTION CAN APPLY FOR AN ABSENTEE BALLOT*****
 

The last day to register to vote for new residents or non registered voters is Tuesday, March 24, 2020 at 8:00 pm in order to be eligible to vote in the Annual Town Election.  The Office of the Town Clerk is open until 8:00 pm on that date for Voter Registration purposes only.  IN PERSON VOTER REGISTRATION HAS BEEN CANCELLED AS OUR BUILDING IS CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC!  BE ADVISED THAT A VOTER REGISTRATION FORM CAN BE DOWNLOADED (BELOW) AND DROPPED IN THE BOX OUTSIDE TOWN HALL.  IN ADDITION, YOU CAN REGISTER ON LINE at https://www.sec.state.ma.us/ovr/

DUE TO THE CORONAVIRUS SITUATION, EARLY VOTING BY MAIL WILL BE ALLOWED FOR THIS ELECTION ONLY.  PLEASE NOTE THAT AN ABSENTEE BALLOT WILL BE USED FOR ANYONE WISHING TO APPLY FOR AN EARLY VOTING BALLOT FOR THIS ELECTION.  APPLICATIONS MUST BE RECEIVED FOR BOTH EARLY AND ABSENTEE VOTING NOT LATER THAN NOON on FRIDAY, APRIL 10, 2020.  BALLOTS WILL BE MAILED TO VOTERS UPON REQUEST AND MUST BE RETURNED NOT LATER THAN 8:00 PM ON ELECTION DAY.
 
PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES WILL BE IN PLACE AT THE POLLING LOCATION AS DIRECTED BY THE ELECTIONS DIVISION:
 - All voting booths will be spaced a minimum of 6 feet apart
 - Election workers will be limited to 3 per precinct
 - Entrance and Exit doors will remain open (weather permitting)
 - Hand Sanitizing will be required upon entering and exiting the polling location
 - Voters may bring their own marking pen (blue or black ink only) or a lead pencil to mark their ballots
 - Voting booths and markers will be sanitized after each use
 - Election staff will be provided with masks and gloves
 - Maximum of 10 voters inside the polling location at a time
 - Social distancing will be observed by all poll workers amongst themselves and voters
 - Drop off of mail in ballots will be allowed at the Polling location on election day as the Town Offices are closed
 - Mail in ballots can be dropped in the Lock Box outside of the Town Office Building any time
